I have a question for you to ponder: What makes you worry most about what other people think? Is it your social status? Job? Body? Intelligence? Parenting? Athleticism? Do you want to be seen as super spiritual? Kinder than anyone? Funnier? Healthier? Stronger? More put-together? Less needy? Seeking approval is something many of us have grown up with -- it's like a thread that runs through our days, entangling us without our awareness. As you can see here, I don't care what people think about how I dress. However, I do care whether someone thinks my writing is good and I often try to prove myself with my words. Maybe you're just the opposite. We all have our stuff, and the funny thing is, the people we think are so focused on us are often caught up in their own stories of comparison and needing approval. It's likely they're not even paying attention. We may feel like the center of the universe sometimes, but alas, we are not. How freeing it is to be reminded that only One opinion matters -- that of our loving God -- and He has already accepted us completely in Christ. The more often we remember this, the less and less we will look for outward validation. My husband often pictures himself in the center a huge arena with an audience of One. Imagine how that One delights in you, cheers for you, and never changes His mind about you, regardless of how you feel about yourself or how anyone else feels about you. The matter is settled: You are loved and accepted, just as you are.
