Sitting here at our pathetic excuse for a garage sale, watching people handle the precious, dusty treasures we’ve unearthed from all over the house. They ask me how much I’m selling this or that for, and I tell them sadly, a dollar. These things that once held a prized place in our home have taken a beating over the years, and now we call them “clutter” and hope someone else will be willing to take them off our hands. That’s just what happens when things get old and worn.
And it makes me think of we humans and how the world sometimes discards us and makes us feel less-than-valued. Life can beat us up and wear us out, and often, we don’t feel like we have much left to offer. The world idolizes youth and beauty and fame and success and perfect happiness, and when we don’t fit into a social-media-worthy category, we begin to believe the lie that we’re not enough. But here’s the truth: No matter what condition we are in – no matter how broken or ugly or discouraged we feel – we are absolutely precious to our Maker. Our wear and tear and our scars only serve to bring us closer to Him as He constantly reaches out with compassion and tenderness. Our worth doesn’t rise and fall because we’re good enough, clean enough, or well put-together. Jesus paid for us when we were at our worst, and we are forever priceless in His sight. Just remember who you are when you’re feeling less-than – you are worth everything to the One Who matters most, and that will be true for eternity.
