Dear Ones,
This is a gentle reminder that you can’t give away what you don’t have. I have this sign hanging on the front door to remind us of this truth as we step out into the world. I know it may seem scandalous to insert “Love You” between loving God and others, but I have learned that when you hate yourself, it’s impossible to be a true vessel of love for anyone else. I’m not talking about a selfish kind of self-love – always putting your needs before others, making your own wants and desires more important than anything. I’m talking about being kind to yourself. Speaking the compassionate words that your own heart needs to hear. Allowing yourself to make mistakes without being crushed by self-loathing. Treating your body like the beautiful temple it is. If you can’t imagine this kind of self-love, begin with God’s love for you. You mean everything to Him, and it surely brings Him joy when His precious ones experience their great worth. Allow Him to pour into you. If you have a hard time feeling His love, ask Him, "Lord, how are You showing me Your love today?" And then watch and listen for the answers. My favorite teacher, John Eldredge, says it like this: The way that you treat your own heart is the way you’ll end up treating everyone else’s. So before berating yourself about not doing more for others, consider how you’re treating your own self first. Open your heart to receive God's love, be inspired to offer love to YOU, and let it spill over to all who share your life.
