My 9-year-old came running in from the backyard this morning and told me to close my eyes and open my hands. While this always makes me wonder what in the world I’m about to feel, I did as he asked, and felt a fragile shell drop into my palm. He had discovered the left-behind part of a cicada. I learned that cicada nymphs spend the first part of their lives underground – this can last up to 17 years! When it’s their time to crawl out, they will find the nearest vertical object to shed their exoskeleton and emerge as a winged adult. It’s not the end of their lives when they leave their outer selves behind – it’s a glorious new beginning. After living a good part of my life terrified of death, I believe God has given me these reminders in Creation to bring His assurance and peace. Knowing the love of Jesus means knowing that there is no end for us when this earthly life is over – there is only a beautiful, beyond-words beginning. If you’ve ever struggled like I have, I highly recommend the inspiring movie, After Death (https://www.angel.com/movies/after-death). It is a hope-filled reminder from those who have encountered God’s presence in death and returned with stories of indescribable light and love. They come back with far less fear and greater joy – with a longing to experience that Presence again. Sometimes when we’re just getting by in our day-to-day lives, it helps to zoom out and be reminded of the bigger picture. This world is not our home, our struggles are not forever, happy endings are real, and Someone is waiting to welcome us with open arms. May these truths bring hope to your heart today.
