Sometimes, when my son loses a video game, I hear him in the other room crying out, “I’m so stupid!” Of course, it hurts my mama's heart, and I remind him not to say those things about himself — that sometimes we have to deal with loss, but it doesn't determine our worth. I can’t imagine what it’s like for God, who hears every word we speak to ourselves — how we berate ourselves for not meeting our high expectations, how we criticize ourselves in comparison to others, how we put ourselves down when we feel like we just can't get it together. We are not our worst critics though; we have an enemy who loves to get a word in and thrives on our negativity. Our heavenly Father is always there, ready to remind us at any moment of our great worth. He surely longs for us to see ourselves through His eyes. What if, every time we hear that unwanted voice pulling us down, we stop and remind ourselves, "I am precious to the One Who made me." Speak it out. Hold onto the truth of it. Nothing else you will ever be matters more than this.
