There was an old 90's hit playing in the grocery store today – “I'm all out of faith, this is how I feel. I'm cold and I am shamed, lying naked on the floor…” It's Torn, by Natalie Imbruglia, and it doesn't end well. People who've hit rock bottom know exactly how this feels, but many of us also share a secret. Those of us who’ve lost the careers that have defined us, the money we found security in, the people we counted on, the addictions we've hidden behind. Those who’ve ended up homeless or in prison or desperately alone or with the feared diagnosis. Those who’ve taken the darkest paths and found ourselves in the heaviest chains of sin. The secret we've learned is this: Jesus is everything. When you lose all you’ve held onto, you find out that nothing in all the world was strong enough, or good enough, or trustworthy enough to keep you afloat. You learn that the “inner self” the world celebrates today is missing something. You learn that everything is passing away, no matter how hard you try to hold on. When you give up trying to hold yourself together, you may hear a whisper that sounds something like “I’m here. I love you. You’re not alone”. Or, that message may come through someone who cares for you. Or maybe you're hearing this truth right now for the first time. No matter how it happens, when we reach the end of our rope, that’s where we find Him waiting. Jesus was never meant to be a sideshow, a name we only utter at church, someone we just call on for help when we're desperate. He wants to be right here in the center of us. In every decision and relationship and memory we make -- our best friend. He delights in us, and He wants to give us all we could ever need. He asks only that we trust Him with our whole hearts. And that may feel like a big step, but when everything else fails, we learn that it’s the one step that will change everything.
