There's a little spider that lives in my kitchen right behind the coffee maker. His name is Earl. For some reason, I'm no longer able to kill even the ugliest critter these days -- there have been many paper towel rescues and releases into the wild. But Earl gets to stay. He is my tiny reminder of God's magnificent Creation -- yes, even the 8-legged kind. Lately, the Creator has been drawing me toward the wonders of nature to reveal His heart to me. I look at a sprawling tree and I'm in awe that it began as a tiny seed. I see the huge thunder clouds stacking up on the horizon and I imagine the hand that formed them. Bright dandelions and tiny roly polys and trickling creeks and sprawling fields -- they all speak to me of His love. Often, we wait for a trip to the beach or the perfect sunset to marvel at what God has made. But the truth is, we are surrounded by wonderfully-detailed miracles every day. And if the natural world doesn't do it for ya, look at the next human being that crosses your path. A God-created soul -- a wondrous combination of heartbeat and breath and personality and possibility -- wrapped in skin and placed in this world with a beautiful purpose. Next time you're feeling spiritually dry, just consider the creation that appears all around you you like a love letter from your Maker. Better yet, learn to notice it every day. Consider this prayer: "Lord, open my heart to all You have made. Speak to me through Your creation. Remind me that I am a part of the beautiful, eternal story You are telling. In Jesus' Name, Amen."
