My son dressed himself for church this morning. He chose some hot pink shorts as the perfect match for this stylish banana shirt. He’s creatively quirky like that, and it’s one of my favorite things about him. How often do you notice the creativity around you? Even more importantly, how often do you notice your own ability to create? You don’t have to be a musician or a painter to produce a work of art – it can be a simple as planting flowers in the backyard, setting a table for guests, or gathering the words in your mind to write a note to someone. We are constantly creating in our own little ways – it’s an instinct we have because we’re made in the image of the One who spoke the universe into existence. We carry the spiritual DNA of the Maker of intricately painted butterflies and meandering streams swarming with shining fish and skies that glow in colors that make our hearts sing and human beings, each with our own fingerprints and souls and personalities. You’ve never lived through an ordinary day, even if you failed to notice. Look around. Pay attention to all the ways God is creating, to the ways people are creating – think of how you’re being invited to make your mark on the world – even in the tiniest ways that may never be known by anyone but you and your Maker. It’s a freedom we’ve been given for our joy; it’s part of our purpose here; it’s one of the ways we're being invited to bring God's love to life. Consider asking Him today how you might use your gift of creativity to love Him back, to bless those around you, and even just to enjoy a moment all your own.
